Vote for Citizen Legislators – not Career Politicians
As Alexander Hamilton warns in The Federalist Papers, politicians “place power and importance over service to their country.”
Whether Republican or Democrat, Conservative or Liberal, power corrupts.
Today we have a “do-nothing” congress made up of career politicians whose members are constantly campaigning and catering to big-money lobbyists and special interests. It’s time to “Vote the Bums Out!”
Our Founding Fathers understood that our Republic required a restrained government led by citizen legislators. Hamilton defined a Republic as “a government which derives all its powers directly or indirectly from the great body of people, and is administered by persons holding their offices during pleasure for a limited period, or during good behavior.”
But as Hamilton knew, and as we see today, “Enlightened statesmen will not always be at the helm.”
Our Texas Legislature has the same problem as Congress. Once a legislator has been in office for several terms, he/she becomes complacent. As an example, despite having a strong Republican majority, our last legislative session was an exercise in “kicking the can down the road” when it comes to the budget.
Why is our Governor calling for “truth-in-budgeting”? Evidently our legislators have not been truthful. During the 82nd Legislative Session, the Texas Budget was balanced with an IOU.
If your legislator is bragging about having “balanced the budget without raising taxes,” that is a big red flag.
This week early voting continues in our Republican Primary Election. Election Day is Tuesday, May 29. When you cast your vote, remember that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing and expecting a different result. Let’s not vote for the same thing this time around.
