While there has been a lot of bluster from various groups and individuals regarding the election for the next Speaker of the Texas House, no candidate has yet emerged who ignites real passion in the hearts of grassroots conservatives. Reliable inside sources have confirmed that is about to change.
What about existing endorsements? Despite the fact that current Speaker Joe Straus reportedly holds enough signed pledge cards to win the race (one report said 76 Rs and 50 Ds), West Texas Representative Warren Chisum is challenging Straus. That tells you all you need to know about the reliability of “pledge” cards. Anecdotally, prior to the last session, Rep. John Smithee had lined up support among the Republican caucus on the Sunday before the vote, and by Monday morning, those votes had evaporated. Today Rep. Bryan Hughes rescinded his support of Straus. Accusations of retaliation through redistricting were reportedly made by a Straus operative. Many activists have a favorable opinion of Warren Chisum and consider him to be a contender. But other candidates are said to be negotiating behind the scenes, and there could be an announcement as soon as tomorrow.
The bottom line for fed-up conservatives remains the failure of a GOP majority, under the leadership of Speaker Straus, to take care of business. When Voter ID failed, Republicans failed. Voters in Texas, and all across America, will no longer accept politics as usual. Texans have spoken. With a new majority of 99 Republicans in the Texas House of Representatives, it is not enough to simply “Oust Straus” in favor of yet another politician. There is now an opportunity to change the status quo. It is time to elect a competent, conservative statesman who will not compromise on principle.
Who will it be? Yes, the Speaker’s race just got exciting. Stay tuned.
