While Democrats seem to have narrowed their presidential nominees down to Hillary or Obama, the list of Republican candidates seems to be growing by the day. Party activists are split among many of the candidates, and although Giuliani is the frontrunner, his candidacy will be hard-pressed to unify the party. Personally, I like Giuliani’s leadership ability. His accomplishments in New York City were remarkable. The problem is that with a 50/50 electorate, even a one percent loss of support will cost the GOP candidate the election. And Giuliani’s liberal social views would cause many conservatives to vote for a third-party candidate or not to vote at all. Unfortunately for Rudy, that is the reality.
So where do we turn for a unifying, electable, conservative candidate? For the second time in history, Republicans may nominate an actor. Former Senator Fred Thompson appeared on Fox News Sunday with Chris Wallace last month, and his interview is still reverberating through Republican ranks. Go to just about any political blog and you'll find that the hottest topic in conservative circles is a possible Thompson candidacy.
My favorite line from the Fox interview was when Senator Thompson said that he had not spent his entire life planning on running for president, so that if he lost, it would not be the end of the world. How refreshing!
Americans are hungry for leadership. We are living in the most dangerous time in history. Most politicians are so worried about their political careers and the next campaign that they have lost sight of the dangers and issues that must be faced. The last thing we need is a career politician who values power over principle. Senator Thompson said that he has not specifically sought political office, but when a door opens to him, he considers walking through it. And it looks as if the door is opening for a presidential run. I urge you to explore the possible candidacy of former Senator Fred Thompson by visiting www.fred08.com and www.draftfredthompson.com. His presidential candidacy is an exciting prospect, and I believe that he could be the one to once again unite our party and win the White House.
